Why Might I Need Cast Iron Over PVC Gutters?

Both cast iron and PVC gutters boast a number of different benefits each, but there are some situations where you would want to choose cast iron over PVC.

Listed Buildings

Certain buildings and properties are listed, due to things like historical interest. These properties have to follow certain laws and must obtain consent from local building authorities if they are to be modified in any way. Often, PVC guttering isn’t an option for these properties in order to preserve the longevity and character of the buildings, so cast iron guttering would be a good choice here.

Heritage/Company Buildings

If your building or property has been passed down in your family, or is a commercial building, cast iron gutters might look more striking and professional than PVC. Depending on the impression you want your house or business to give, you may want to choose cast iron.

Extreme Weather

PVC gutters are incredibly weather sturdy, but in EXTREMELY hot temperatures, there is a possibility of warping, and damage in incredibly strong winds. Cast iron gutters will not warp in hot temperatures, and due to their weight are less likely to be shifted by extremely strong wind.

Aesthetics

Some homes simply don’t suit PVC guttering. Authentic, period buildings looks far more regal with cast iron guttering as opposed to plastic. This is of course a personal decision, and depends entirely on how you want your property to look, and what aesthetics you prioritise.
